3. What is Money Laundering?
Money laundering is the process of making criminally obtained funds appear legitimate. It typically involves three stages: 1. Placement — Introducing criminal proceeds into the financial system (e.g., depositing cash) 2. Layering — Concealing the trail through a series of complex transactions to disguise the origin of funds 3. Integration — Reintroducing laundered funds into the legitimate economy Terrorist financing involves providing funds to support terrorist activities, regardless of whether those funds are from legitimate or illegitimate sources. Both money laundering and terrorist financing are serious criminal offences in virtually all jurisdictions.
